Learning About the Author and Illustrator

Many readers are curious about the creators of the books they enjoy. Here are more than 600 links to author/illustrator sites that will help satisfy that curiosity. Included in the site are Children's, Young Adult and Adult authors and illustrators.

Based on a Book

'Based on the Book' is a compilation of over 1,000 book titles, short stories, and plays that have been made into motion pictures. Utilizing the Internet Movie Database as the authority on release dates, all movies in this collection have been released since 1980.
Another great site -- just discovered is Bookreporter.com.

The Lexile Framework for Reading

If you need to find out the Lexile number of a book this is the web site for you.  Put in the author (last name first!) or title of the book and if it has a Lexile number it will be listed.  Before you go to this site make sure you have checked our OPAC or AR BookGuide.  Lexile numbers are listed there also.

Newport Beach Public Library

Check here for the OPAC of the Newport Public Library. Click on the tabs for the type of information you need. The "Find Information" tab has all of the online services listed. You must be a member of the library to use these services and can access them by putting in your library card number. It does not cost anything to become a member of the Newport Beach Public Library.

CA Recommended Literature (K-12)

This is the California recommended literature list of books students should< read. To use this site you need to select the "Search List" option. From this page you can scroll down and select the grade level, language, culture, genera, etc. you are interested in. Set the list up by author or title and how many titles you would like on a page. Each title is annotated.

This is the College Board's recommemded list of books for readers of all ages.

Fantastic Fiction

This site has bibliographies for over 5000 authors and information on over 100,000 books. Check on books by author, awards, etext, series, and more.

 

Orange County Public Library

Check here for the OPAC of the Orange County Public Library. Click on the left hand side of the home page to get to their OPAC. If you are a member of the system you can use your library card number and PIN to gain access to the online resources. If you do not have a library card you can still see what materials they have in the system. It does not cost to become a member of the Orange County Public Library.

Series and Sequels

Check this page to find out what the library has in series and sequels. A series will be listed and if the library has the book it will be marked with a "WHS." If the book is an Accelerated Reader book AND we have the test it will be marked with an "AR." If it is an Accelerated Reader book and we do not have a test for it it will be marked "ARnt." Huntington Beach Public Library

Check here for the OPAC of the HBPL. Select Catalog/Renewals, Login to Geoweb, and if you are not a member of the library select "Guest Login" to search the library catalog. If you have a library card from the library enter your card number (without any spaces) and your password. This will not only allow you to view the library catalog, but to use the library's online services as well. To become a member of the Huntington Beach Public Library it costs $25.00 / year if you do not live in Huntington Beach. It is free is you live in the city.

What's Next" helps you search adult fiction in series. A "series" is two or more books linked by character(s), settings, or other common traits. e.g. Sue Grafton's "A is for Alibi", "B is for..." etc. "Star Wars" series Searches can be made by title, author (last name, first name), or series
